The Sudanese Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure has unveiled a comprehensive plan to develop and modernize the railway network, spearheaded by the rehabilitation of the strategic line linking Port Sudan, Atbara, and Khartoum. This will be achieved through a partnership with a Canadian company. This line is considered one of the most important transport arteries in the country, given its vital role in connecting seaports with economic and administrative centers, making it a key artery for the movement of goods and commodities. A statement issued by the ministry explained that

Al-Tijani Haroun, held an expanded meeting at the headquarters of
the National Roads and Bridges Authority in the Karari district,Khartoum, in a step aimed at bringing about a qualitative shift in the transport and infrastructure sector. The Minister affirmed the Ministry's commitment to implementing development projects to raise performance efficiency and enhance the sector's contribution to the national economy, noting that the expansion plan also includes upgrading the (Haiya-Kassa) line as part of efforts to develop eastern Sudan, in addition to arranging for extending the service to Kosti city in the coming period. The attendees pointed out that upgrading the Port Sudan-Atbara-Khartoum railway line would lead to improved operational efficiency and increased revenues, given its heavy use.
